One of the ways we’ve helped our agricultural customers is replacing older straight bore shaft mounted gearboxes with Dodge Torque-Arm II reducers by utilizing their Short Shaft Twin Tapered Bushing Kit.
A long time ago, the only type of shaft mount gearboxes available were straight bore units and they didn’t require much shaft. In recent years, most manufacturers stopped making the straight bore units due to improved tapered bushing systems.
The problem is that if an existing straight bore unit goes bad, you can’t just swap it out because there isn’t enough shaft on the old unit to accommodate the newer tapered designs available from most manufacturers.
The Short Shaft Twin Tapered Bushing system is a far superior locking system compared to the older straight bore designs (which just used a keyway and setscrews), but the feature that makes it such a great problem solver for changing out old straight bore units is the amount of shaft required for installation.
These units are commonly located on top of grain bucket elevators, so they’re not easy to access or change. Before the short shaft bushing option, customers would need to replace the shaft which meant having to remove the head pulley, remove bearings (which usually get destroyed in the process), and un-splice and resplice the belt. Typically, this would all need to be done with a crane, so it’s a time-consuming and expensive process.
Binkelman has been able to offer the short shaft bushing kit, which only requires the customer to replace the gearbox – saving them time and money while upgrading their equipment.

BORNELL SUPPLY
Back in 1949, an astute entrepreneur by the name of Von Ellis had a vision. With World War II over, America manufacturing, untouched by the conflict, was redirecting its capacity towards satisfying unprecedented demand for consumer goods. This, in turn, created a strong need for industrial goods, especially those in the power transmission area.
Ellis believed the market in and around Piqua was ripe for a distributor of these products. However, he lacked particular expertise. Since a motor was typically the starting point of all power transmission applications, he sought a partner who knew motors. He learned of an owner of a local electric motor shop known as Electric Motor Service Company and approached him with his ideas. Ralph Bornhorst was the owner’s name. Evidently, Bornhorst liked what Ellis had to say because the two went into business together using “Born” from one name and “Ell” from the other, setting up shop with a staff of three in the Shawnee area of Piqua Ohio on February 24, 1949.

Binkelman and Baldor-Dodge Team With a Solution at Toledo Water Treatment
More than half a million people in Toledo, Ohio, and the surrounding area use an average of 70 million gallons of water a day. And it’s the responsibility of the city of Toledo’s Department of Public Utilities water treatment plant to make sure the water, pumped from Lake Erie, is safe. But with aging and outdated equipment being used in a key purification process, that job was getting more difficult. So when funds became available for an upgrade, plant management turned to a trusted local distributor to help them find a high- performance solution that was easy
to use, easy to maintain and energy efficient.
Andy McClure, plant administrator for the Collins Park facility, says 12 mechanical variable speed drive systems, installed in 1941, power fully submerged paddles on a 60-foot-long shaft in four large treatment basins. These paddles stir added chemicals in a process known as flocculation, one of the most common steps in removing contaminants from drinking water. The process induces particles to collide and clump together into larger and more easily removable “floc.”
The mechanical system was an early way to achieve variable speed control, but McClure says the PIVs are well past their prime.
